With all the spare time us uni students have been blessed with in recent times, it’s time to get creative! Why not try something new to keep yourself occupied? Spicing up your Instagram profile is the perfect way to utilise social media to work on your creative, photography and editing skills. I’ve rolled up my sleeves and tested out a plethora of Instagram-tailored apps to bring you my favourite top 5 free apps that will make your Insta pop!

Unfold

Unfold is only a recent discovery, but it’s a goodie! The app offers themed story templates, where each theme has numerous templates to keep your stories unique and interesting for your audience. Examples include Film Frames and Ripped Paper. Unfold has everything you’ll need to differentiate your Insta Stories – various fonts and 15 filters, too!

HighlightCover

HighlightCover will quickly become your trusted companion for creating Instagram Story Covers. Why bother with story covers, you ask? Well, story covers will enhance the overall aesthetics of your Instagram profile and contribute to the cohesiveness of your feed. Unlike other free apps, HighlightCover offers plenty of choice in icons, fonts, and background images so it’s impossible not to find something that suits your personal brand or style!

VSCO

VSCO has a variety of fabulous presets or ‘filters’ that will help you create a uniform colour theme for your Instagram grid. From cool to earthy warm tones, there’s something for everyone. What makes it unique to other photo editing apps is that you can also edit videos – so you can use presets for any IGTV or stories you post to keep things cohesive! You can also share your flicks by publishing them for the VSCO community to see.

Snapseed

You may find yourself with a photo that has varying degrees of darkness or brightness. Auto-enhancing the whole photo doesn’t always work in this situation. That’s where Snapseed will save the day. Snapseed’s brush tool allows you to selectively adjust for exposure, saturation and colour temperature.

Plann

Plann is a useful app because of the versatility of its functions. It allows you to plan and rearrange photos in your Instagram grid before you publish them, which is handy if you are trying to maintain a theme. From there, you are able to schedule and directly post photos to your linked Instagram account. If you have an Instagram Business Account, Plann will also allow you to view your performance metrics!

If you try any of these handy apps out, we’d love to hear your thoughts on them in the comments. Better yet, leave your Instagram handle down below so we can check out your new poppin’ feed!

Happy insta-gramming. All the best, Bojana x
