Are you constantly juggling 10 things at the same time? Forgetting important appointments? Leaving things for the last minute? Well, you might like to hear that you are not alone. As students we usually have to juggle between assignments, uni roles, paid work, socializing, the list keeps going, right? It can get very stressful and overwhelming at times, especially when you feel like you don’t have your 💩 together. Don’t worry there is a solution to this never ending problem: use a planner!

Having a planner to organize yourself can make a huge impact on your life, mood and relationships, including the most important relationship with yourself. So I have come up with 5 reasons why you should start using a planner to help you stay sane, achieve all your goals and become the best version of yourself.

Here are my 5 reasons:

Reason 1: A planner will help you get organized

When your surroundings are hectic and your mind is going a million miles an hour (cue 2020), your brain recognizes there is a  greater demand for energy which you can’t handle. As a consequence your brain triggers a stress response (sad reacts only). Planners will help give you a holistic view of how your day/month and year will look like, when your assignments are due, upcoming tests, work shifts, etc. Writing everything down will help you to recall information easier and manage your activities more effectively. This will ultimately help you stay motivated and on top of your day-to-day routine.

Reason 2: A planner will boost productivity and help you achieve personal goals

Once all your activities are organised, you can start writing down your short and long-term goals. When you write things down you are 42% times more likely to do them. Perhaps you want to land an internship in that company you love? Finally quit that hospitality job? Join a sports team? It can be anything! Setting goals with dates will not only help you become clearer on what exactly it is you want to accomplish, but also motivate you to complete the tasks that are necessary to achieve your bigger goals. Multi-tasking is the enemy of productivity. Using a planner will help you devote a specific amount of time to a single task until it is completed without losing track.

Reason 3: A planner will allow you to track your progress

It is hard to notice goals and achievements on the spot without keeping record of them. But when a week, month or year passes and you have a planner to look at, you will be amazed at all the things you have achieved. A planner helps you record all your projects and successes, even your learning points (mistakes, bumps or mishaps) so that you won’t commit them again next year. It takes 21 days for a person to create a habit, so once you start using a planner you won’t be able to live without one.

Reason 4: A planner helps you stay healthy

Physical health is equally as important as mental health, and planners help you achieve both.  Having an organised mind and ticking tasks and goals off will give you a greater sense of achievement. This increases the serotonin levels in your brain. You can also lock in cook times, and gym sessions. This way you are more likely to do the activities you have planned, and increase your dopamine levels through physical activity and healthy eating! Engaging in healthy activities will not only boost your energy but also give you a feeling of satisfaction and willingness to do it again.

Reason 5: Planners are good for screen breaks

Sitting down to plan and organise your life in a planner is a great opportunity to disconnect and take a break from your phone or laptop screen. It has been proven that reducing screen time can prevent headaches, improve your sleep, stress levels and increase your focus.  Bonus points if you use your planner outside in the sun while your body takes in some vitamin D to get your creativity flowing.
